Adhesive bonding is a practical method for joining plastic parts when the plastic material, adhesive, joint design, and operating environment are compatible. Bonded plastic assemblies may use structural adhesives, specialty adhesives, or solvent cements depending on the materials being joined and the performance requirements of the part.
Some plastics, including ABS and acrylic, are easier to bond with compatible adhesives and solvent cements. Others, including HDPE and polypropylene, are more difficult to bond and may require special adhesive systems, surface preparation, surface treatment, or another joining method.
To achieve a strong, lasting joint, select plastics and adhesives that are compatible with each other and suitable for the operating environment, including chemical exposure, temperature, mechanical load, and expected service conditions.
