Low Temperature

Plastics for low temperature environments

A number of plastics offer low temperature properties for cold and extreme cold cryogenic environments. These low temperature plastics are a good fit for a variety of applications. Devices that must operate in cold temperatures are often made from tough, durable plastics such as UHMW (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene), which maintains its toughness in cold environments.

Cryogenic seals are frequently manufactured from PEEK and DuPont™ Vespel® since these polymers have moderate modulus at low temperatures. Low friction grades such as DuPont™ Vespel® SP-21 and TECAPEEK® PVX allow for low actuation torque when used in valves and regulators with low service temperatures.
