Expert Material Knowledge Uncovers Source of Radome Performance Inconsistency
Curbell helps engineers select reliable dielectric materials
An RF design engineer in the aerospace industry specified PCTFE as a dielectric material for use in cryogenic condition radomes. During laboratory testing, inconsistent electrical properties between material batches was revealed. A Curbell technical expert noted that varying levels of crystallinity is common between batches of PCTFE which will alter the electrical properties of the material.
DuPont™ Vespel® was recommended for consistent electrical property performance
Curbell recommended DuPont™ Vespel® polyimide for testing. The crystallinity of DuPont™ Vespel® shapes is well-controlled and batch-to-batch electrical properties are known to be consistent.
The engineer was able to qualify DuPont™ Vespel® as a suitable dielectric material due to its performance during testing. The manufacturer continues to use this same material today and is extremely satisfied with the consistent performance of the finished radome.
