Plastic materials for orthotics and prosthetics
Orthotic and prosthetic plastic materials are used to fabricate braces, supports, sockets, liners, check sockets, foot orthotics, and other O&P components that require the right combination of stiffness, flexibility, durability, thermoformability, and patient comfort. Rigid plastic sheet materials, flexible EVA copolymers, foams, and transfer papers can support a range of orthotic and prosthetic fabrication needs.
HDPE and polypropylene are often used for orthotic and prosthetic devices where formability, toughness, and durable support are important. KYDEX® thermoplastic sheet may be used where a tougher, more rigid thermoformed material is needed. Flexible EVA copolymers such as OP-TEK® Flex are used as socket liners, and ProComp® carbon reinforced composite is used for custom orthotic and prosthetic fabrication.
