Choosing the Best Plexus® Structural Adhesive for Metal-to-Plastic Bonding
When it comes to bonding metal to plastic or composite substrates, not all adhesives are created equal. Plexus® structural methyl methacrylate adhesives (MMAs) offer high strength, toughness, and ease of use, but selecting the best grade depends on the specific combination of materials, environmental conditions, and assembly process requirements.
Here’s a closer look at how four Plexus® adhesives compare.
Plexus® MA8105 – Strong, Low Odor Multi-Material Bonder
MA8105 is formulated to bond a wide variety of metals (including aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized steel) to engineering plastics and composites like ABS, polycarbonate, fiberglass, and nylon. It stands out for its excellent strength, fatigue resistance, and heat resistance, often with little or no surface prep. Its lightweight, non-filled formula supports weight reduction and downgauging in structural assemblies. The 1:1 mix ratio is easy to dispense, with a lower odor formulation ideal for transportation, industrial, and high-throughput manufacturing environments.
Plexus® MA8110 – Specialty Adhesive for Galvanized and Coated Metals
MA8110 is a specialty adhesive designed for bonding galvanized and electrocoated metals, especially challenging types like G60 and G90 hot-dipped galvanized steel, without the need for primers or extensive surface prep. It also bonds well to aluminum, stainless steel, ABS, PVC, and FRP. With excellent fatigue and impact resistance, plus strong durability in harsh environments (including resistance to salt spray), MA8110 is ideal for outdoor or corrosion-sensitive assemblies such as HVAC, enclosures, and automotive panels.
Plexus® MA830 – High-Speed Production for Metal-to-Plastic
MA830 is a fast-curing two-component adhesive designed for high-speed production environments. With a rapid working time of just 4-6 minutes and primerless adhesion to metals and plastics, it helps manufacturers increase throughput without sacrificing bond strength. It excels at bonding aluminum, steel, ABS, acrylic, rigid PVC, and even difficult substrates like gelcoat and carbon fiber. MA830 is ideal for automated or semi-automated assembly lines where fast set times and minimal prep are critical.
Plexus® MA310 – Balanced Performance for General Metal/Plastic Bonding
MA310 is a versatile structural adhesive for bonding metals, plastics, and composites where a slightly longer open time is needed for precise alignment or clamping. It offers a medium working time of 15-18 minutes, excellent strength, and stiffness. When bonding to aluminum or steel, PC120 primer is recommended to ensure optimal adhesion. Its non-sag, thixotropic formula is ideal for vertical or overhead applications. With consistent strength development at room temperature, MA310 is often used in assemblies requiring both durability and precise placement.
