TECANYL® VH2 Aerospace-Grade PPE Thermoplastic
Lightweight, Durable, and Recyclable for Aircraft Interiors
TECANYL® VH2 from our material partner Ensinger, Inc. is an aerospace-grade PPE (polyphenylene ether) thermoplastic with outstanding toughness, dimensional stability, and flammability characteristics. It is often specified for aircraft applications where tight dimensional tolerances and toughness and durability are required.
TECANYL® VH2 is frequently used instead of aluminum or thermoset composite materials to achieve weight savings for aircraft interior applications with light mechanical loads. Unlike thermoset composites, TECANYL® VH2 can be recycled, resulting in more environmentally sustainable aircraft designs.
TECANYL® VH2 passes stringent FAR 25.853 testing for use in aircraft systems.
Applications:
- Aircraft interior wall spacers
- Seat tracks
- Panels, guides, and mounting brackets for electrical and electronic components
- Spacers and mounting brackets for air ducting
Key Benefits:
- Dimensional stability
- Toughness and durability
- Excellent flammability characteristics
- Lower cost than some other high performance polymers including PEEK and Torlon® PAI
- Lightweight, less than half the density of aluminum
- Can be recycled
TECANYL® VH2 has a low rate of thermal expansion and it has low absorption of atmospheric moisture. This allows parts made from TECANYL® VH2 to be machined to close dimensional tolerances. Some traditional aerospace grade thermoplastics such as fire retardant nylons exhibit significant dimensional changes due to swelling from moisture absorption and high rates of thermal expansion. The graph below shows the low thermal expansion rate and the low moisture absorption of TECANYL® VH2 compared with other polymers.
Dimensional Stability of TECANYL® and Other Thermoplastics

TECANYL® VH2 also has outstanding toughness and impact strength compared with many other engineering plastics. This makes it an outstanding choice for aircraft applications where toughness and durability are required. Other engineering polymers may be prone to cracking from vibration or impact during use. The graph below shows the impact resistance of TECANYL® VH2 compared with other thermoplastic materials.

TECANYL® VH2 has outstanding flammability characteristics based on UL, IEC, ASTM, and FAR 25.853 standards. Details of these properties are shown on the material properties sheet.
TECANYL® VH2 has a lower specific gravity compared with aluminum or thermoset composites. This results in weight savings, increased fuel efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions.
The graph below shows the low specific gravity of TECANYL® VH2 compared with aluminum and glass/epoxy composite as well as PEEK.
