What is UHMW?
UHMW or UHMW-PE (ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) is an extremely tough plastic with high abrasion and wear resistance. The versatility of polyethylene has made it a popular plastic for countless industrial applications that require durability, low friction, and chemical resistance. UHMW is easy to fabricate and machine.
What is Virgin UHMW?
Virgin UHMW is an unfilled grade of UHMW.
What is Reprocessed UHMW?
Reprocessed UHMW is an economical alternative to virgin UHMW for non-food applications.
Is UHMW FDA Compliant?
Some grades of UHMW comply with one or more of the FDA’s guidelines for direct food contact. LubX® C is an FDA compliant UHMW with a lower coefficient of friction that eliminates the slip-stick effect or backsliding. LubX® C is used for high performance sliding in material handling applications. Polystone® M XDT is an x-ray detectable grade FDA compliant UHMW for food and beverage processing. Need help finding an FDA compliant UHMW material for your application? Ask a plastics expert.
Can UHMW be used as a wood replacement?
Yes. Because UHMW offers very low moisture absorption it is a popular choice for marine construction applications like dock fender pads, pile guards, and anti-skid walkways. UHMW does not corrode, rot, or splinter like wood.
What are common brands of UHMW?
UHMW brands include Polystone® M, Tivar®, and GUR®.
What are common UHMW applications?
UHMW is widely used for chute, hopper, and truck bed liners, wear strips and guide rails, star wheels and idler sprockets, rollers, high speed conveyors, packaging and food processing machinery parts, marine dock bumpers, fenders, and pile guards, plus many more applications.
