Antimicrobial Plastic Materials

Materials formulated to resist bacterial growth with good chemical resistance to disinfectants and cleaners

Antimicrobial plastics use antimicrobial agents to protect a plastic’s surface from the growth of microorganisms and provide additional surface protection between cleanings. Antimicrobial technology protects against bacterial degradation and can inhibit the amount of certain product-damaging bacteria compared to an untreated surface.

When material is directly treated with an antimicrobial additive, the technology is incorporated into the manufacturing process to protect the material for the lifetime of the product.

Antimicrobial Plastics Material Options

AMGARD™ – Available in OPTIX® acrylic and TUFFAK® polycarbonate, AMGARD™ transparent sheet is formulated with a silver ion antimicrobial agent to protect the material from microbe surface degradation. AMGARD™ has been independently tested to ISO 22196 “Measurement of Antimicrobial Activity on Plastics/Non-porous Surfaces” and complies with applicable EPA requirements as a Treated Article. AMGARD does not shatter into sharp-edged pieces like glass, is half the weight of glass, and is easy to fabricate for interior applications like protective barriers, office partitions, safety enclosures, and equipment housings.

AMGARD™ SR – Polycarbonate and acrylic AMGARD™ SR offers the same benefits as AMGARD™ with increased abrasion and chemical resistance. This scratch-resistant grade is formulated to withstand repetitive cleanings and high traffic environments. Both transparent sheet substrates have a high performing coating to provide enhanced scratch resistance and exceptional resistance to many common disinfecting cleaners. 

KYDEX® Thermoplastic Sheet – Inherently antimicrobial by nature of formulation, KYDEX® sheet resists microbial development as it does not readily provide a nutrient source for bacteria. When tested by a third party laboratory in accordance with ASTM G-21 and G-22, the KYDEX® sheet samples did not allow any growth, demonstrating that KYDEX sheet performs exceptionally without the addition of an antimicrobial additive. 

King MediGrade® – This super tough building sheet for healthcare applications has an advanced antimicrobial technology for protecting the product surface against stain and odor causing bacteria, algae, and fungi. MediGrade® antimicrobial HDPE sheet is environmentally stabilized to withstand harsh outdoor conditions and will not rust, delaminate, or rot when exposed to UV, humidity, or water. 

SIMOGUARD™ Antimicrobial Additive – SIMOGUARD™ is an antimicrobial additive available for an added level of protection to several HDPE materials. The proprietary EPA-registered antimicrobial ingredient in the additive keeps material clean, durable, and more hygienic than untreated material. SIMOGUARD™ can be added to FDA approved HDPE and PP, Class B compliant HDPE panels, UV stabilized HDPE, Polytone® sheet for playgrounds, and lightweight BOATBOARD® HDPE.

While helpful in inhibiting the spread of bacteria, the antimicrobial technology used is not designed to prevent the transmission of any disease or infectious agent nor protect from disease-causing bacteria.
