Friction and Wear Characteristics of Plastic Materials White Paper Released
Orchard Park, N.Y., October 6, 2021
Curbell Plastics, Inc., one of the nation’s top suppliers of plastic sheet, rod, tube, tapes, and fabricated parts, published a new technical paper for engineers and machinery designers evaluating plastic materials for friction and wear applications.
Plastic Materials for Friction and Wear Applications white paper introduces the science behind four distinct mechanisms of polymer wear: sliding wear, abrasive wear, impact fatigue, and rolling contact fatigue. The paper includes a review of the scientific literature as well as examples of real-world applications.
The paper’s author, Dr. Keith Hechtel commented, “We often speak with engineers, designers, and maintenance managers looking for materials that resist wear to achieve longer service life. Polymer tribology is an expansive field of study and one of the most complicated subjects in the engineering literature. This paper is intended as an introduction to the topic. We welcome readers to contact us with their specific questions regarding plastic material selection.”
This 17-page paper includes charts, graphs, and illustrations demystifying the most common friction and wear frustrations that engineers and designers run up against. The paper concludes with a process to identify plastic materials as candidates for use in friction and wear applications.
