What is Polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate (TUFFAK®) is a transparent, strong and stiff thermoplastic with outstanding impact resistance even at low temperatures. Polycarbonate sheet, rod, and tube are easy to machine and have excellent dimensional stability. Polycarbonate sheet thermoforms well, is easy to paint, and bonds well using solvent cements or adhesives. We offer a wide variety of TUFFAK® grades to satisfy your specific application requirements. Looking for a thinner polycarbonate sheet? Makrofol® films are available including light diffusing Makrofol® LM for LED lighting, Makrofol® DE for printing and graphics, and Makrofol® FR flame retardant where flammability is an issue.

What is the difference between general purpose, machine grade, and glass-filled polycarbonate?

General Purpose Polycarbonate– Unfilled grades of polycarbonate such as TUFFAK® GP exhibit glass-like transparency and extreme toughness. General purpose clear polycarbonate sheet has a polished surface, is UV stabilized, and is often used in glazing applications. It features outstanding impact strength and superior dimensional stability. TUFFAK® GP polycarbonate has a 5-year warranty against breakage, making it cost effective for thermoformed parts and fabricated components.

Machine Grade Polycarbonate– Is a low stress polycarbonate used in many applications that require heavily fabricated, tight tolerance parts such as electrical insulator components, manifolds, diaphragms, and semiconductor parts. Machine grade polycarbonate has high impact strength, high modulus of elasticity, outstanding dimensional stability, and good electrical properties.

Glass-Filled Polycarbonate– Glass-reinforced polycarbonate is used in many industrial applications where metals are commonly used. The addition of glass fibers provide improved strength, stiffness, and lower the thermal expansion. Various amounts of glass fibers may be added from 10% - 40%. While glass-reinforced polycarbonate has less impact strength than standard grades, it is still tougher and more impact resistant than most other plastics and die cast aluminum.

Flame Inhibiting and Flame Rated PolycarbonateTUFFAK® LF is a low flammability sheet that is flame inhibiting and UV stable. TUFFAK® FI is a flame inhibiting non UV stable sheet. For International Building Code (IBC) Class A Fire Rating, TUFFAK® CA is code compliant for wall and ceiling finishes, coverings, and decorative panels and meets NFPA 286 flammability requirements.

What are common brands of polycarbonate?
Polycarbonate is also known as TUFFAK®, Sustanat, and TECANAT®. Makrofol® is a polycarbonate film brand.

What are common polycarbonate applications?
Polycarbonate is widely used for indoor and outdoor signs, architectural glazing, POP displays and graphic holders, skylights, face shields, machine guards, semiconductor machinery components, transparent manifolds, and many other applications.
