3M™ double-sided bonding tapes provide strength, conformability, surface adhesion, and temperature resistance to successfully bond a variety of materials with strength and speed for permanent, structural, and repositionable applications. Attach metal, plastic, and glass, without screws, welds, rivets, fasteners, or adhesives. 



3M™ VHB™ tapes pressure sensitive adhesive bonds on contact with no drying time. VHB™ tapes eliminate rivets, screws, bolts, welds, and liquid adhesives. They improve design construction, aesthetics, and productivity. With unmatched strength, these tapes increase the overall durability and reliability of every product bond.

3M™ VHB™ TAPE OPTIONS

4611 (dark gray)– 3M™ VHB™ 4611  tape is a general purpose firm foam adhesive that has the added feature of high temperature resistance. It is good for general industrial applications including bonding panels to metal frames. It works best with high surface energy substrates. 

  • Bondable substrates: Aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel
  • Applications: High temperature, can be used on metals prior to powder coating, UL 746C

4905 (clear)– 3M™ VHB™ 4905 tape is good for general industrial bonding applications. This clear acrylic adhesive works best with medium-high surface energy substrates. 

  • Bondable substrates: Metal, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate
  • Applications: Join transparent material, mount backlit translucent signs, edge-bond resin filled glass 

4910 (clear)– 3M™ VHB™ 4910 tape is good for general industrial indoor bonding applications. It has a general purpose acrylic adhesive on both sides. Works best with medium-high surface energy substrates.

  • Bondable substrates: Metal, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate
  • Applications: Mount backlit translucent signs, seal skylight inner/outer assemblies, edge-bond resin filled glass

4941 (gray)– 3M™ VHB™ 4941 tape has a soft adhesive on both sides of a medium foam an provides excellent adhesion to a wide range of materials including plasticized vinyl. Use to bond and seal polycarbonate lens over LCD and plastic windows to pre-painted control panels/switch gear. Perfect for mounting vinyl wiring ducts and conduit channels, and seaming vinyl banners. UL 746C.

  • Bondable substrates: Aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, composites, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS
  • Applications: Provides cushioning, dampening, and impact resistance, plasticizer resistant, UL 746C

4950 (white)– 3M™ VHB™4950 tape has a firm adhesive on both sides of a firm foam. It is good for general industrial indoor bonding applications including roof panel bonding on truck cabs and bonding glass to metal oven doors. 3M™ VHB™ 4950 creates a permanent seal against water, moisture, salt, and more, and works best with medium-high surface energy substrates.

  • Bondable substrates: Aluminum, stainless steel, galvanized steel, copper, lead, glass, rigid pvc, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS, polyester, nylon, phenolic
  • Applications: Use with metals where high dynamic stresses are involved

5952 (black)– 3M™ VHB™5952 tape has a modified acrylic adhesive on both sides of soft foam core that bonds to a wide variety of substrates including powder coated paints and irregular surfaces. It creates a permanent seal against water, moisture, and more. UL 746C.

  • Bondable substrates: Powder coated materials, glass, acrylic, polycarbonate
  • Applications: Excellent adhesion to the widest variety of surfaces including most powder coated paints and plastics

Tech Tip– Most substrates are best prepared by cleaning with a 50:50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water prior to applying 3M™ VHB™ Tapes. There are exceptions.

Normal Tensile1 (T-Block Tensile) - ASTM D897 - to aluminum, room temperature, 1 in2  (6.45 cm2), jaw speed 2 in/min (50.8 mm/min). Peak force to separate is measured. 72 hour dwell.

90° Peel Adhesion2 - Based on ASTM D3330 - to stainless steel, room temperature, jaw speed 12 in/min (304.8 mm/min). Average force to remove is measured. 72 hour dwell.

Static Shear3 - ASTM D3654 - to stainless steel, tested at various temperatures and gram loadings. 0.5 in2 (3.23 cm2). Will hold listed weight for 10,000 minutes (approximately 7 days). Conversion: 1500 g/0.5 in2 equals 6.6 lb/in; 500 g/0.5 in= 2.2 lb/in2.

Dynamic Overlap Shear4 - ASTM D1002 - to stainless steel, room temperature, 1 in2 (6.45 cm2), jaw speed 0.5 in/min (12.7 mm/min). Peak force to separate is measured. 72 hour dwell.


* VHB™ Tapes have a shelf life of 24 months from date of shipment when stored at 40°F to 100°F (4°C to 38°C) and 0-95% relative humidity. The optimum storage conditions are 72°F (22°C) and 50% relative humidity. Performance of tapes is not projected to change even after shelf life expires; however, 3M™ does suggest that 3M™ VHB™ Tapes are used prior to the shelf life date whenever possible.
