MOMENTIVE® Silicone Adhesives

Silicone adhesives with excellent temperature performance, dielectric properties, and weatherability

MOMENTIVE® RTV silicones consist of rubber and gel products developed for adhesion, sealing, coating and encapsulating/potting applications. The oxygen containing backbone of these silicone adhesives provides excellent temperature performance, both high temperature stability and low temperature flexibility, dielectric properties, and outstanding weatherability.

Applications range from simple gap sealants to electronic encapsulants and room-temperature-molded solid silicone seals. Important market segments include military, aerospace, transportation, electronics, construction, and consumer products. Numerous RTV silicone grades offer compliance with UL, FDA, military, and private OEM specifications.

One-part systems vs. two-part systems
One-part silicone adhesives– are the easiest to use, requiring no weighing or mixing 
Two-part silicone adhesives– require accurate measuring and thorough mixing

Two different cure technologies are available for silicone sealants 
Condensation cure– relies upon atmospheric moisture to catalyze the curing reaction and a byproduct is volatilized as the reaction proceeds. 
Addition cure– is not reliant upon atmospheric moisture and does not generate any byproducts. The addition cure produces virtually no shrinkage. For these reasons, the addition cure is preferred for molded applications. A drawback of the addition cure is its susceptibility to cure inhibition.

MOMENTIVE® SILICONE ADHESIVE OPTIONS

One-Component, Room Temperature Cure Adhesives/Sealants
Ready-to-use, cure to a tough, resilient silicone rubber on exposure to atmospheric moisture at room temperature.

IS800 Series/IS802 (white), IS803 (black), IS808 (translucent)– general purpose adhesive sealant for sealing and bonding applications. Paste-consistency product can be applied to horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces in thicknesses up to 6mm (1/4 in). FDA, USDA, and NSF compliant. UL recognition.

RTV 100 Series/RTV102 (white), RTV103 (black), RTV108 (translucent), RTV109 (aluminum), RTV112 (white), RTV116 (red)– are extremely versatile adhesives that are FDA, USDA, and NSF compliant, with MIL-A-46106B and UL recognition.

RTV102, RTV103, RTV108, and RTV109 sealants, are standard strength paste-consistency products that can be applied to horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces in thicknesses up to 6mm (1/4 in). For general sealing and bonding, electrical insulation, and formed-in-place gaskets.

RTV112 and RTV116 are self-leveling, standard strength, high-temperature sealants for thin section potting, self leveling protective coatings, and electrical insulation.

RTV128 (translucent)– typical applications include, sealing vertical joints, bonding dissimilar materials such as metal to plastic and glass to aluminum, electrical insulation of wires and terminals, and formed-in-place gasketing. Has MIL-A-46146B and UL recognition. Retains elastomeric properties at temperatures of -75°F to 400°F for long periods and to 500°F for short periods. Low odor. Excellent weatherability, ozone, and chemical resistance.

RTV133 (black)– flame retardant, non-corrosive, non-halogenated, low odor, and UL 94 V-0. For use in the electronic, aerospace, appliance, transportation and other industries where resistance to burning of the finished product is a significant design consideration. Typical applications include coatings for electronic and integrated circuits and semi-conductors, and connections on electronic parts assemblies. RTV133 is slower curing both in tack-free time and cure-through time than many atmospheric moisture cure silicone adhesive sealants. Paste-like consistency for use on horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces in thicknesses to 6mm (1/4 in).

RTV142 (white)– low volatile, low odor, 586053 Navy Sea Systems compliant. Applications include sealing and bonding of electronic components, and electronic gasketing. RTV142 has a paste-consistency allowing it to be used on vertical and overhead surfaces without sagging. Since it utilizes a moisture cure system, RTV142 sealant should not be used in thicknesses of greater than 6mm (1/4 in).

RTV157 (gray),  RTV159 (red)– are high strength silicone rubber adhesive sealants. RTV159 sealant also provides high temperature performance. Both of these products release acetic acid vapors as a by-product of cure. RTV157 and RTV159 sealants are paste-consistency products which can be applied to horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces in applications requiring high strength and temperature performance. These adhesive sealants must not be used in thicknesses of greater than 6mm (1/4 in). Applications include high voltage wires and cables, valve sealants, fluid metering devices, gaskets, and turbines.

RTV162 (white), RTV167 (gray)– electronic-grade silicone adhesive sealants with MIL-A-46146B and UL recognition, high strength, and low odor. They retain elastomeric properties for long periods at temperatures from -75°F to 400°F and for short periods up to 500°F. Both have excellent electrical insulation properties, resistance to moisture, dust, dirt, UV, ozone, and chemicals. Typical applications are bonding of electrical components to circuit boards and sealing of exposed wires.

RTV6708 (translucent)– sealant is a neutral cure, with a paste-consistency which can be applied to horizontal, vertical, and overhead surfaces. It has a long work life which allows for tooling of finished assemblies, low odor, and AMS 3374 and UL recognition. For general sealing and bonding.

Silmate® RTV1473 (black)– is a sealant designed for formed-in-place gasketing applications where good oil resistance is a design consideration. RTV1473 silicone rubber has a paste-like consistency when initially dispensed. Forms an elastomeric, resilient silicone rubber gasket.

Two-Component, Room Temperature Cure Adhesives/Sealants and Potting Compounds/Encapsulants

RTV11 (white), RTV21 (pink)– FDA compliant, supplied ready-to-use with a base compound and DBT (dibutyl tin dilaurate) as the standard curing agent. DBT is suitable for most applications, however other catalysts are available to facilitate deep section cure, faster cure, and automated mixing. Composition is free of solvents and solvent odor. RTV11 is FDA compliant and can be used in food contact applications other than contact with acidic foods where FDA regulations apply. Typical applications include rubber molds, formed-in-place gaskets, medical molds, high voltage power supply potting, and general electrical potting.

RTV31 (red), RTV60 (red)– high temperature silicone elastomers supplied ready-to-use with a base compound and DBT (dibutyl tin dilaurate) as the standard curing agent. DBT is suitable for most applications, however other catalysts are available to facilitate deep section cure, faster cure and automated mixing. RTV31 and RTV60 differ primarily in viscosity in the uncured state. RTV31 applications include fabrication of rubber parts, potting and encapsulating electrical motors, transformers, surge protectors, and industrial filters, as well as casting molds for low-melting point metals, rubber rollers, and thermal insulation. RTV60 is good for potting and encapsulation.

RTV511 (white),  RTV560 (red), RTV577 (white)– are low temperature silicone elastomers. They are supplied ready to use with a base compound and DBT (dibutyl tin dilaurate) as the standard curing agent. Other catalysts are available to facilitate deep section cure, faster cure, and automated mixing. RTV560 has the widest useful temperature (highest and lowest) of any silicone elastomer from -175°F up to 500°F continuously and up to 600°F for short periods of time. Applications include cast-in-place heat shielding, thermal insulation, and potting and encapsulation of electrical assemblies.

RTV566– silicone rubber compound is a two-part product processed and tested for applications where low outgassing is required. RTV566A base compound is supplied ready to use with RTV566B curing agent. RTV566 has a room temperature cure and excellent release properties. It retains elastomeric properties from -175°F up to 500°F continuously, and up to 600°F for short periods of time. Applications include those with low outgassing, cast-in-place heat shielding, thermal insulation, potting and encapsulation of electrical assemblies.

RTV615 (clear), RTV655 (clear)– are optically clear liquids which cure at room temperature to high strength silicone rubber with the addition of curing agents. These two-component products are supplied with curing agent in matched kits which are designed for use at a convenient 10:1 ratio by weight. These compounds are clear and colorless, low viscosity, and easily pourable. They differ in low temperature flexibility. RTV615 has the capability to remain flexible at temperatures from -75°F to 400°F, RTV655 from -175°F to 400°F. They can be used for protection of electronic components and assemblies against shock, vibration, moisture, ozone, dust, chemicals, and other environmental hazards by potting or encapsulation of the components and assemblies. Clarity permits visual inspection for easy identification and repair of encapsulated parts.

RTV627 (dark gray)– flame retardant, UL V-0, room temperature vulcanizing compound for potting and encapsulation, particularly where flammability is of concern. This product is supplied with curing agent in matched kits which are designed for use at a convenient 1:1 ratio by weight or volume. RTV627 silicone rubber compound has an easily pourable viscosity of about 1300 cps. Applications include production line potting compound to provide protection of electronic components and assemblies against thermal shock, vibration, moisture, ozone, dust, chemicals, and other environmental hazards, encapsulation of high voltage transformers, voltage regulators, power converters, and complete power supplies.

RTV630– blue two component silicone rubber compound cures at room temperature to a high strength silicone rubber. This product is supplied in a matched kit of base (A) component and curing agent (B) component which is designed for use at a convenient 10:1 ratio by weight. The viscosity of the catalyzed compound is a moderately pourable 150,000 cps. This medium viscosity product will form thin, light-weight molds with excellent durability. The high tear resistance and inherent release ability of RTV630 rubber compound make it well suited to the manufacture of intricate castings, by reproducing each part exactly to detail. Other applications include prototype parts, production tools for casting epoxies, and rubber rolls. Electrical circuits requiring a tough potting compound with outstanding vibration withstanding capability find RTV630 unequalled.

RTV664 (beige, blue)– is an addition (platinum) curing mold making product offering high durometer for applications requiring greater dimensional stability. RTV664 is a high durometer (62 Shore A), long work life product. It offers excellent chemical and abrasion resistance and was designed for high production on manufacturing lines.


PRIMERS

SS4004P (pink), SS4044P (light yellow), SS4120 (clear), SS4155 (blue), and SS4179 (clear)– primers are formulated for use with MOMENTIVE® Performance Materials RTV silicone rubber adhesive sealants. MOMENTIVE® one-component products offer primerless adhesion to many substrates. Primers are used to help promote adhesion to difficult-to-bond substrates. For most MOMENTIVE® two-component products, a primer is required when an adhesive bond is needed between the silicone rubber compound and a non-silicone surface. All primers are one-component products requiring no mixing and are supplied ready-to-use as easily pourable solvent solutions.

SS4004P and SS4044P primers help promote adhesion to metals (such as aluminum, copper, steel, stainless steel, brass, and galvanized metals), porous materials, unglazed ceramics, and wood. SS4004P primer is bright pink, providing easy visual determination of uniform coating. SS4044P primer is virtually identical to SS4004P primer, but is designed for applications where discoloration of the substrate is undesirable.

SS4120 primer helps promote adhesion of MOMENTIVE® Performance Materials addition cure RTVs and is used where clarity is needed.

SS4155 is a general purpose primer for use with any RTV.
