To compete in the Baja SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) competition, engineering students are tasked with designing and building a single-seat, all-terrain vehicle. The prototype must be a reliable, maintainable, ergonomic, and economic production vehicle that would serve a recreational user market. The students learn to work together as a team to design, engineer, build, test, promote, and compete with a vehicle while remaining within the SAE rule limitations. This provides an opportunity for the students to experience the production cycle first hand under many different conditions as well as the importance of the manufacturing and marketing processes for the production of an all-terrain vehicle.

According to Dana Eschler, Mechanical Engineering Student and Baja SAE Frame Lead, “This award is incredibly special to us as it is in honor of the founding member of the second iteration of our team, Mike Schmidt. Mike sadly passed away in an accident prior to his graduation from RIT. This is the first time in 16 years that the team has won this award.”
