Orchard Park, NY, December 9, 2015 – Orchard Park-based Curbell Plastics, Inc., one of the nation’s premier suppliers of plastic sheet, rod, tube, film, adhesives, sealants and prototyping materials has been honored by the International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD) with a second place award in the IAPD Plastics Application Design Competition. Curbell’s entry involved the use of polyethylene rails to slide a newly constructed highway bridge (Cottonwood Creek Bridge) into place in rural Oklahoma.

According to Keith Hechtel, Senior Director of Business Development for Curbell, “Bridge sliding is a relatively new technology that shortens road closures and reduces the environmental impact associated with highway bridge replacement. Curbell supplied the construction team who built the new Cottonwood Creek Bridge with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene rails. These highly engineered plastic rails served as low friction surfaces, which allowed the new bridge to be gently pulled into place. Curbell Plastics was very pleased to be a finalist in the contest.”

IAPD members, plastics professionals and schools/universities had the opportunity to showcase innovative new uses of performance plastics through the Application Design Competition. Submitted designs were required to be made with materials produced or distributed within the IAPD family of performance plastics in stock shapes, engineering, see-through, or pipe, valve and fitting families of plastics. Finalists, including Curbell, presented their designs at a live event and the audience then voted for their favorite application. Curbell has been a finalist in the competition for every one of the three years that the competition has been held.
