Liz Grimes brings a chemistry background and more than 30 years of plastics and glass lamination experience to her role as Senior Business Development Manager at Curbell Plastics. From her home base in our Philadelphia/New Jersey location, Liz provides technical expertise and practical guidance to customers in a broad range of markets across the United States and in Canada. These customers include top names in the transportation, retail point-of-purchase display, security glazing, and architectural glazing industries — markets for which she has developed a keen understanding of our customers’ needs and how performance plastics can help them through the unique challenges they face.
Since joining Curbell Plastics in 2011, Liz continues to expand the company’s expertise in transparent plastics for technically challenging applications, where she has focused much of her research and application work throughout her career. You’ll find Liz’s name on patent applications for two inventions — one for a transparent bullet-resistant sheet, and another for a die-cuttable acrylic sheet — as well as white papers, how-to articles on plastic cutting and fabrication, and coverage of influential women in the plastics industry.
Customers frequently turn to Liz for product selection, thermoforming and fabrication advice and training, product failure troubleshooting, and guidance through what she calls the “technical jungle” of codes and specifications in highly regulated industries like transportation. Here she brings a wealth of knowledge gained from her previous positions as a regulatory scientist and specialist focused on transparent and flame-retardant polymers. Liz spent more than a decade of her career advising on regulation compliance and writing plastics-related codes, standards, and specifications for ASTM International, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). She also has extensive experience with materials regulations set forth by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
She combines her deep regulatory and material capabilities knowledge with experience as a senior technical service engineer, where she provided technical support on a broad range of acrylic and polycarbonate sheet products. This hands-on work often found Liz climbing across a roof to test skylight applications, resolving significant product claims through investigation and analysis, training customers in appropriate fabrication methods, and participating in research and development.
Even though Liz’s job requires traveling much of the year, she still cites travel as her favorite thing to do in her spare time. She enjoys camping with her family on the weekends, and she is proud to volunteer as a skiing coach and mentor for the Special Olympics of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She brings her loves of being outdoors and supporting the Special Olympics together in frigid fashion by jumping into the Delaware River each January to benefit the Special Olympics Polar Plunge.
A Partner in Your Success
“I love that my job is far from monotonous,” says Liz. “There’s a different challenge each day. In my position, I not only get to advise on material selection and application — the technical counseling that I’ve enjoyed doing my whole career — but I also get to help customers get new products off the ground, support them in product expansion, and empower them to become more self-sufficient through training on cutting and fabrication.”
