“If you can think it up, we can make it.”
This short mantra goes a long way for Kevin Sigler, Inside Sales and Operations Manager for the Curbell Plastics San Diego location, and the rest of Curbell’s San Diego team. It sums up the exceptional value they deliver to industrial, biotech, sign manufacturing, and other customers in need of custom plastic parts and products, as well as plastic sheet, rod, and tube materials.
Kevin has spent his entire career in the world of plastic fabrication, distribution, and sign-making. He brings to each customer engagement more than 20 years of well-rounded component fabrication and plastic materials experience — know-how that translates to greater efficiency and product performance. He’s spent 15 years in customer service and inside sales; over 20 years managing computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine departments; and time handling plastic material purchasing as well as FDM and SLS 3D printing/additive manufacturing processes.
“Being inside sales and production, I am able to take a customer’s project vision beginning at the quoting process and refine it to be manufactured the way they want it,” Kevin says. To supplement his own extensive knowledge, he collaborates with the Curbell Plastics team of materials experts to suggest appropriate material options for a project based on chemical resistance, wear characteristics, and other critical properties.
A Partner in Your Success
“Many customers don’t have design or engineering departments or often times even CAD programs to work up their ideas, and they don’t necessarily understand how to get from idea to final product,” Kevin says. “They are able to provide a basic drawing, and from that drawing with my production and fabrication teams we give them a manufactured part according to the way they envisioned it. This saves time and money.”
Many of his proudest achievements he won’t discuss due to non-disclosure agreements, but a couple that are in the public realm are focused on the future of sustainability. Kevin has been working with a major genomics biotechnology firm to bring a synthetic algae reactor from vision to reality. The photosynthetic efficiency assay they developed was featured on the Twitter feed of one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies. He also worked with engineers and horticulture scientists to develop a prototype indoor garden that was profiled by the New York Times.
Bringing Ideas to Life
From his day-to-day work at Curbell to his volunteer activities, Kevin is a designer at heart and a maker to the core. At a young age, after attending a magnet school for the arts, he started his own graphic design business. Once he entered the world of plastics and after learning CAD to program in 3D and operate CNC machines, he found his niche helping customers bring their ideas to life in the real world.
“I enjoy what I do,” he says, adding that he also enjoys sharing his knowledge with colleagues, customers, and youth in his community — reflecting education’s high place in Curbell’s core values. During his time as a member of the board of directors at Point Loma High School, he aided in the setup of lesson plans/projects for teachers to use to instruct students about CNC machining, lathes, millwork, and other manufacturing fundamentals that help lead to fruitful careers.
Later, Kevin worked on the board of directors for the MakerPlace in its additive manufacturing department, in conjunction with other directors, to pass on to members knowledge of what was, at the time, the new manufacturing process of 3D printing.
Kevin is an avid bicyclist who races competitively in multiple formats. He has competed in downhill mountain bike on some the most advanced courses, such as the Ensenada Urban Downhill race, with its famed harrowing 32-foot ramp-to-ramp jump. On the BMX circuit, in 2018, he came in first place during his first time competing at the national level. He is also a regular programming volunteer at San Diego ComicCon.
